Nov 21 |
In Week 7 of "A Developing World", we discuss the effects HIV/AIDS is having on development in many countries. Two speakers will address issues related to how developing countries are coping with the AIDS crisis, including the impact it is having on their societies and economies. Activities planned for the evening will also feature a quiz to help you discover how much you know about HIV/AIDS. HIV/AIDS links: UNAIDS - the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (good for global
stats and information): Health Systems Trust: Health Systems Trust is a dynamic independent
non-government organisation established in 1992 to support the
transformation of the South African health system. Canadian HIV/AIDS Clearinghouse: The mandate of the Canadian HIV/AIDS
Clearinghouse is to provide information on HIV prevention, care, and
treatment to community-based organizations, health and education
professionals, resource centres and others with HIV and AIDS information
needs in Canada. The specific focus is to support Canadian activities
in the
area of HIV prevention. Family Health International: Family Health International (FHI) works
to
improve reproductive and family health around the world through biomedical
and social science research, innovative health service delivery
interventions, training and information programs. The organisation works
in
partnership with universities, ministries of health and non-governmental
organizations, conducting ongoing projects in the U.S. and more than 40
developing countries. Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network: The Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network
is
based in Montréal (Québec), Canada. It is the only national,
community-based, charitable organization in Canada working exclusively
in
the area of policy and legal issues raised by HIV/AIDS. It was formed
in
November 1992 and has over 200 members across Canada and internationally.
Interagency Coalition on AIDS and Development (probably the best
site to visit for information and links): ICAD's aim is to lessen the
impact
of HIV/AIDS in resource-poor communities and countries. It is a coalition
of
Canadian international development organizations, AIDS service organizations
and other interested organizations and individuals. Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) Campaign for Access to Essential Medicines:
The Campaign has three pillars: Overcoming access barriers; Globalization;
