In Week 1 of "A Developing World", we set the framework for the full 8-week series of workshops. Through 'popular education' techniques (group-based case studies and simulations), we start to understand why the issues we'll tackle throughout the series are so inter-related.

In one exercise, we'll break into small groups and compare varying definitions of international development. We will see how viewpoints can differ greatly based on the backgrounds and experiences of the participants.

In one of our most popular simulations, we will play the role of decision-makers in a non-governmental organization (NGO). We have been given several applications for funds from various development groups (e.g., disaster recovery in Africa, peace process in Latin America, food bank in Ottawa...), but have a limited budget. How do we decide where the money goes? This role-playing will be done in small groups, followed by sharing results amongst all the groups.
