Oxfam Canada presents: SweatshopsIn Week 2 of "A Developing World", we examine sweatshops, factories in developing countries producing clothing and other materials for the developed world. The principle issue is human rights violations, as globalization causes governments and businesses in developing countries to compete for the lowest costs at the expense of the factory workers. Whose 'fault' is it? The factory management for performing the violations? Local governments for forcing 'cost efficiencies' to make international deals? Multinational businesses like Nike for causing the 'race to the bottom' amongst developing countries? Consumers like us for buying based on price? Activities this evening will include some brief exercises on where our clothes come from and who gets paid how much. Then we'll give you a Sweatshop Fashion Show, an entertaining way of learning more about specific businesses abusing human rights in their factories. We'll also have a guest speaker with in-depth experience in the issues (TBA).
These workshops are hosted by the Ottawa Local Committee of Oxfam Canada. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions on our workshops, please contact us by email or at 237-1698 ext. 277. |
